My love affair with food started at a very early age, an affair that would make me transcend continents, travel vast distances and eventually put down roots in Sydney. Having been born and raised in England and for the most part content and happy, I decided to try my luck at Catering School. Two years later I was set free and yearned to experience other countries and cuisines. I traveled, taking my skills with me and for the next 20 years I worked in fine dining restaurants, 5 star hotels, bakeries, patisseries & cafes. I ate, I drank, I laughed, I fell over a few times then ate some more. Food was more than fuel to me, more than just sustenance, it united people, it broke down barriers and it was fun! Cooking, eating and sharing food should always be fun!
I can still remember the earliest food memories of my childhood : visiting my Grandma and Grandpa's and enjoying their homemade Afternoon Tea on their best china. The table was literally groaning under the weight of Trifles, Cupcakes, Chocolate cake, Eccles cake, Banbury cake, Lardy cake and of course Scones. My Grandparents always laughed, giggled and occasionally scolded each other but from that tiny kitchen, their culinary passion always exceeded expectations.
My Mother was also a genius in the kitchen, many recipes she had inherited from Grandma and before the days of google she would spend hours pondering over recipe books. My sister and I would peer through the stair banister while my parents had dinner parties and see each course (and there were many) waft into the dinning room. Never content with one sweet offering my Mother would make at least three desserts, each more gooey and oozing with cream then the last, the aroma drifting down the hallway was always mesmerizing, sweet and delicious.
These memories have always stayed with me, the sheer excitement and awe of children, eyes wide open and gob-smacked with the sheer abundance of cakes, pastries, desserts and other yummy sweet confections on offer.
Here at the Sconery we want to reunite you with these memories, take a seat, prise open a warm buttery scone, a spoonful of jam, a dollop of cream, no - two dollops of cream, close your eyes and enjoy!
